COVID-19 Update: Latest testing numbers and masking requirement

Students walking on campus

Dear Carolina Community,

This week we are pleased to report that the number of COVID-19 cases and positivity rates for our campus community continue to decrease. In the last seven days, we have had a 6.8% symptomatic positivity rate at Campus Health and 3.1% at CTTP. The positivity rate at UNC Health for symptomatic patients for the last seven days is 13%. The cases that Campus Health sees continue to have mild to moderate symptoms.

Many have asked about the campus mask requirement since the state’s change to mask requirements that will start on March 7. Today the UNC System announced that all system schools should be mask-optional starting that date unless their local guidelines require masks. The Orange County Health Department announced last week that the county’s indoor mask requirement remains in place at this time. This means that we will continue to follow that guidance and require masks indoors on campus. If OCHD lifts the county mask requirement, we will follow their guidance in accordance with the UNC System and communicate changes to our campus requirements then.

One of the reasons we have been able to mitigate spread on our campus, even during the omicron variant earlier this year, is the adherence to the COVID-19 Community Standards by so many of you each day. We know you are wearing your mask, getting boosted, staying home when sick and testing when necessary. Thank you for your continued commitment to our shared goals.
