COVID-19 Update: Carolina Together Testing Program

Barcode labels being applied to sample collection
Barcode labels being applied to sample collection vials at the UNC-CH COVID Surveillance Laboratory. The vials will be used in the collection kits that are also assembled at the lab. Samples are brought to this lab where they are run through a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing process to determine if the sample is positive or negative for COVID-19. Dear Carolina Community,

We are excited to provide our updates for the Carolina Together Testing Program. To start, we wanted to thank all of the members of our community for their diligence in adhering to the COVID-19 Community Standards and the testing program. We have an important update about our hours of operation, so please be sure to pay close attention to our Sunday hours below.

As of this morning, we have conducted more than 39,000 tests since our first day. The positivity rate for the asymptomatic evaluation testing through the program remains 0.6%. The reservation system and lines have help reduce wait times to 5-10 minutes, and often there is no wait at the testing centers. The current turnaround for results is approximately 30 hours.

Social Events and Wellness Days

As we approach a weekend with the UNC-Duke men’s basketball game and the Super Bowl, as well as our first wellness days the following week, we want to provide a couple important reminders. Testing is a tool to identify cases early, but it does not mean you should ignore the CDC recommendations or the University’s COVID-19 Community Standards.

Remember, a test result is only a snapshot of your status at the moment the test was taken, so even if you are negative, make plans to watch the games with friends virtually or outdoors with less than 10 people, with masks and at least six feet of physical distance. Additionally, we encourage you not to travel during the wellness day breaks, but if you must travel, make a plan to get tested before you leave and immediately when you return.
